Hello and Happy New Year!
We have been working on generating donations to open our doors. We have had great support from family and friends and continue to receive interest from our local businesses. As we get closer and closer to our start up capital goals we begin to develop the details of our space. My goal is to open the doors in March and that is what I work toward every day. This project is so important to the kids and the community. The uncertainty of the current state of affairs with COVID-19 and our recent presidential election has turned the spot light on our young people and the difficulties they face, the emotional voids left by upheaval and isolation. This center is vital to the healing of our kids and the sooner we get this going, the better. Until next, Linda

So today I started thinking about this journey. It started out after my family survived a fire at our house and had been living out of suitcases for about 6 months. I don't know what made me think about it, it just appeared in my mind. When we first moved to the school district I was surprised at the lack of youth options available for kids over 5th grade. I grew up in DeWitt and even though I knew it was "a sleepy little town" when I was growing up, I was amazed to see that it still was acting like a little town. The opportunities for youth in the community had not changed much in 20 years and considering the growth of the community, I was shocked to be quite honest.
So, at 11:00 at night in 2018 I got an idea. The concept was simple, create a space for youth to go after school, to meet with friends, to learn something new. Then the idea grew into a place for our community members to have new opportunities like learning to garden, paint, sew, etc. The possibilities seemed endless. Now it's 2020 and the world has done gone and lost it's mind! But the need is still there. Working Minds, Inc. became official in April and earned their 501(c)(3) exemption in June. We continue to search for money, support and ideas and as we near the end of this crazy year I hope I can say that Working Minds will be working in 2021. - Linda |
