So today I started thinking about this journey. It started out after my family survived a fire at our house and had been living out of suitcases for about 6 months. I don't know what made me think about it, it just appeared in my mind. When we first moved to the school district I was surprised at the lack of youth options available for kids over 5th grade. I grew up in DeWitt and even though I knew it was "a sleepy little town" when I was growing up, I was amazed to see that it still was acting like a little town. The opportunities for youth in the community had not changed much in 20 years and considering the growth of the community, I was shocked to be quite honest.
So, at 11:00 at night in 2018 I got an idea. The concept was simple, create a space for youth to go after school, to meet with friends, to learn something new. Then the idea grew into a place for our community members to have new opportunities like learning to garden, paint, sew, etc. The possibilities seemed endless. Now it's 2020 and the world has done gone and lost it's mind! But the need is still there. Working Minds, Inc. became official in April and earned their 501(c)(3) exemption in June. We continue to search for money, support and ideas and as we near the end of this crazy year I hope I can say that Working Minds will be working in 2021. - Linda
